Discovering South Padre Island Fishing Charters

By Mattie MacDonald

While it is important to research any area of interest, this is especially true in areas prone to Hurricanes and other inclement weather. As such, when planning to travel out of Corpus Christi, Galveston Bay or looking at South Padre Island fishing charters, it is even more so. Mostly because all of these areas can be prone to the path of a devastating Hurricane as has been proven more than once in the past.

Most charters have multiple trips that focus on different areas of travel and different types fish. Some of the most successful are day long or multiple day excursions. Half day trips can also be successful but the more time one has to catch fish, the more fish an individual can catch. While rare, and often private, there are also week long trips available in some areas.

Most often the operators of these companies know where to locate a vessel for the best results. Fish, especially salt water fish though tend to move about and change locations. As such, even with knowledge and past success, there is no guarantee that those aboard will catch fish.

Some of the most respected companies and areas may have limits with regards to how many fish an individual can catch and take. Also, if desiring to have fish cleaned as part of the charter, it is important to inquire when making a reservation as to whether or not a cleaning service may be available during the charter, or upon return.

Generally, a charter trip is fun and exciting. Though depending on the company, history and employees, this is not always the case. Anyone planning on going on a charter may want to read a variety reviews of different companies so as to avoid these issues. Still, even when reading online reviews, it is important to note the date the information was last updated as some companies may have gone out of business.

It's also important to know what type of fish, as there are quite a variety. These include, halibut, salmon, tuna and many others. These different species can make a difference not only in the charter service but also in the area selected. Knowing an area has seen successful catches before can go along way in assuring a safe and pleasurable experience. While knowing an area can help, there are a number of factors like air and water temperatures, storms and other weather patterns which can impact a catch.

Private charters are generally advised for social groups with like mind. This can often create a more peaceful charter experience rather than implementing a group within a public tour in which there are many different political views, lifestyles or philosophies. In most cases, this also helps out financially as unlike individual charters, companies generally offer a discount for groups.

When going on a charter, it is important to go for the beauty of the water, scenery and fresh air. If individuals have this motive, then disappointment is less likely if it is a bad catch. Then, if there is a great, or even good catch, the outcome is also more exciting for having not had such expectations.
