The Popularity Of Fishing Tournaments Among Many People

By Michelle Edwards

In the past, going to the stream and catching fish as most parents would take their children was not only for food but also for a sign of bonding and getting to talk about issues. Through this, years later has been turned to sporting activities. Contests in different parts of the world are being held in fishing tournaments organized for anglers.

The aim of these derbies is to win and walk away with a prize. This usually depends on the amount and weight of the fish captured. There are different types of people competing for instance people who compete entirely for sports purposes who do not want to harm the fish. Then there are those who harvest fish in large scale. All these have different ways of determining the winner.

People can always compete as individuals along the edges of water bodies or as a group on water bodies using boats. In each competition a prize is awarded according to the fish caught depending on the species and weight of the fish. This also depend on the strength of the angling line used earning more points to fishers using thin or weak angling lines. Most points earned gets the prizes.

In order to protect the fish as a living wildlife, permits have become a requirement in different parts of the world who want to participate in these contests. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) makes sure that there is a permit in any activity that is to take place in California waters.

They further went ahead to demand a report from the contests entailing the results in the year 1985 and in 1990, more regulations came up which resulted into two types of contests. These two are categorized into event contests and annual contests. An event contest involves the controlling of large commercialized competition and annual contest involve the collection of data from small groups competing.

For instance in Miami, apart from the crazy parting, people travel from all over the nation to come and compete for the prize of 35000 US dollars. The Sailfish Kickoff which usually takes place in December broke world record in 2005 with 400 sailfish being captured in one day.

Competing in different water bodies has been made possible by the emergence of the internet. People can always stay where they are and fish and still win without having to come in a centralized position. Sites such as the American Angler Challenge makes sure for people to participate in the contests with a camera available. They can take two pictures of what they have seized and send and wait for the announcement of the winner at the end of the day.

The fish species are not endangered any more by the emergence of online fish captivity. With people participating in different parts of the world with the nearest water bodies surrounding them. Depletion of fish is not easy as would have been if only one water body was used for the contests. Different sites on the internet such as the American Angler Challenge has also helped tremendously in reducing the number of fish killed in a particular water body. For the ones who do fish only for recreational activity, the fish is spared life and drawn back into the water after they are done.
