Washing Instructions For Your Hemp Jiu Jitsu Gi

By Mollie Burton

When someone plays a sport, they are often required to wear a certain outfit. Players in a team could be expected to wear shirts of a certain color, or whole outfits that are similar or the same to their team mates. Football and hockey players are often seen wearing the same outfits. Martial arts is another sport whereby the participants are required to wear a uniform. This uniform can be referred to as a hemp jiu jitsu gi, and it is important that it is always kept clean.

The clothing worn for martial arts is white, and consists of a jacket and pants which are two separate articles. The lower garment is often designed with a drawstring, while the upper garment can be described as kimono-style. The fighter will also have a belt, of which the color is symbolic of his rank. The belt holds the jacket closed, and is fitted around the waist. An individual who wears dirty clothing will be seen to have no respect for his sport.

Like all clothing, gi's have to be washed in the correct way so that they last for a decent length of time. However, because the garment is white, this can be challenging. You will need to get into the habit of washing it in a certain way. The recommended substances to be used as cleaning agents are vinegar, baking soda and borax.

Firstly, wash your martial arts outfit separately from other items. There should definitely be no other clothes in the machine that are of a darker color. Using a top-loader washing machine, ensure that it will fill with sufficient water for a small load. The water should also be cold. You can then add the detergent and oxidizing cleaner, as well as the other substances mentioned - one cup of vinegar, one-third cup of borax and one-third cup of baking soda.

Once you have the machine filled and the detergents added, switch it on. Leave it on for about 30 seconds before you put in your clothing, as this allows the detergents to dissolve into the water. When the water and detergents are adequately mixed, throw in your clothing to be washed, and leave the machine to do a normal wash cycle.

When the machine is done, you will have to dry your clothing. Gi's should be dried naturally, from the heat of the sun. Air-dried clothing will stay in better condition for longer, and also do not require much ironing. You may not need to iron them at all.

Some people think they ought to bleach their martial arts outfit. This is, however, not a good idea. Over time, the items of clothing will only start to appear yellow in color, and their thread will become thin. Rather find a good color removal product from the store that will be able to take the stains out.

You may also need to wash your sparring gloves from time to time, and the other things you wear, such as an undershirt, will need to be washed. You can use the same procedure for these things as for your gi's. Rank belts cannot be washed, as they will shrink. They will lose their contoured shape.
