Study Tips For Conversational English To Tagalog Speakers

By Tammie Caldwell

It can be observed that there is an increasing number of schools that offer training for foreign languages. Learning conversational English to Tagalog speakers has become an important course for Filipinos who would like to enhance their skills and expand their options. While this is a good option to improve, many Filipinos already know how to speak the language since it has been used as the method of instruction in schools for many decades. There are several ways to learn.

Reading grammar books is perhaps the oldest way to learn the language. These are available from school libraries and bookstores everywhere. People who would like to study the technicalities of sentence construction and subject-verb agreement may refer to grammar books as their guide. Studying these materials may be done anywhere, especially that many of the references are now available as electronic books, which may be saved on their phones and other handheld devices.

People who do not have much time to study printed materials may opt to listen to audio recordings. Initially, they will be asked to repeat simple phrases. As they progress, questions will be asked, in which they will need to provide as customized answer based on what they learned. This is usually done by people whose only time for studying is during driving or commuting to work.

A passive way to learn language and culture is through watching movies. This way, the person learns how to apply certain phrases based on scenarios. He is also exposed to various settings in the movie. This method of learning the language is not just effective but also entertaining. Effectiveness is even increased if the movie has subtitles, which helps the student become more familiar with the words and retain them.

A new learner who will be interacting with native speakers may carry a pocket dictionary to translate complicated phrases. If he has a Filipino-English dictionary, this will also help him in translating his thoughts from his native language into his new language. As he becomes a better speaker, he can use a comprehensive dictionary to learn even more complicated words.

Practicing the skills is one of the best ways to learn and retain it. This is also true for languages. Therefore, it is better for a person to join a group of fellow learners or language speakers who will not judge him in case he makes lapses as he speak. They can also share experiences and references as they interact with one another. Membership to these groups cost minimally.

Hiring a tutor helps someone who want guidance on using the language. The teacher will be there to point out areas for improvement and also train the person with the proper accent. While also effective, this method of learning is the most expensive of all those mentioned.

These various methods are not exclusive of one another, and may be used in combination as preferred. The only requirement is that the student remains diligent and continues to practice the language whenever applicable. In time, he will acquire this as a skill, which he will subconsciously use.
