Lou Gehrig & Medical Information With Stuart Millheiser

By Michael Robert Peterson

ALS is one of the most serious medical conditions in the world, as Stuart Millheiser and others will tell you. However, one has to wonder what the source of this condition is. The first most prominent case, from what I have seen, came about with news about the deteriorating health of Lou Gehrig. Even though this name may sound familiar, you may not know what this individual had accomplished. For those who are unaware, here are a few details to make note of.

Lou Gehrig, for those who aren't in the know, was a Major League Baseball player who was part of the New York Yankees. During his time, which was within the early-to-mid 1920s, Gehrig was renown for his skill as a hitter. Essentially, when he came up to bat, one can be certain that he would not disappoint. His strength became the stuff of legends, in this particular sport, and he is still regarded as one of the best hitters to this very day.

Gehrig, who earned the nickname "The Iron Horse," had a strong career for himself, several accolades having been attained. Between the Triple Crown and numerous All-Star accomplishments, his talents could not have been made clearer. However, as time went on - this was especially true during the late 30s - his physical prowess started to show signs of unpredictable wear. This was a medical issue, and one that the likes of Stuart Millheiser can observe as well.

There was even a time when Gehrig went hitless in one game, which was unlike the man who proved to be so capable at home plate. Later on in life, he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ALS. Even though this was an unfortunate circumstance - as the likes of Stu Millheiser can attest to - Gehrig was still regarded as a top talent. Not only did he stay on as team captain, following this condition, but he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum prior to his death in 1941.

Also referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, it's easy to see why ALS awareness is at such a high level. It has impacted the lives of so many people, not only from a physical standpoint but emotional and mental ones as well. Even though there is no set cure, for the time being, this is why research and knowledge in general are such vital factors. Nonetheless, knowing about Gehrig and his significance is nothing short of important.
