Different Methods Used For The Gator Hunts

By Jason McDonald

Alligators are large crocodilian reptiles with the American species native to southeastern United States and inhabits freshwater wetland like cypress swamps and marshes. They are distinguished from the American crocodile with its darker coloration, overlapping jaws and broader snout. They tolerate the cooler climates more compared to crocodiles who prefers tropical climates.

More people are wanting to experience harvesting or hunting them because of a variety of reasons even when doing so is dangerous. You can go with other people with similar interest on gator hunts and one of them should preferably be an experienced hunter. There are various techniques, practices, and equipment used for capturing them.

Each state have various legal methods to hunt them so familiarize first what these are that your state has allowed. Alligators are hunted at night usually if the state allows it and locating them is through their reflective eyeshine which glow red when lighted. The following are different methods to capture them when in range that you can use.

Wire snares are secured to restraining lines which is loosely mounted to poles with a piece of tape or a small rubber band. They are used usually to secure that gator after being snagged or harpooned when subdued nearby the boat. They could be used also as an initial capture technique but they can not be left alone due to their hand held structure.

Harpoons or gigs might be used in attaching restraining lines to alligators and would consist of a point for penetration affixed to the restraining line. These points for penetration could be a spear point, fish gig, detachable dart or straightened fishhook. Harpoon is mounted typically on a spear, arrow shaft or pole then thrown while a gig is jabbed.

Snatched hooks are some weighted treble hooks affixed to line that are used to affixed into a gator. These could either be held by hand or combined with stout and long fishing rod that has a reel and these would be cast on where the alligator last submerged or over it. They will retrieve them until a contact is made and must be tight until the animal becomes tired.

Baited hook is fishing for alligators essentially and are set within the day though its intent is to capture them overnight. Doing this involves suspending it above water and checking it every day with the best bait being rotten chicken. Sets are usually created with a large hook, rubber band, leader, rope, long cane pole and an anchor.

Bangsticks are common equipment for hunting alligators and considered effective and safe tool for killing them humanely. You could do this by shooting behind the immediate center of their skull cap in an angle directed towards their brain. Discharging it must be done below the waterline for reducing the likely aerial dispersal of bullet and bone fragments.

Guns can be used also though before dispatching the alligator using a bangstick or a gun, they should be captured first. Most firearms are capable to dispatch gators but this depend still on the user and his skills. Hunting is dangerous not only due to the animals but because of the tools you use.
