Twitter & MMA: Whom To Follow & Why

By Rod Bourgoine

If you don't have a twitter account, then quit reading and return to 1997. For everyone else, twitter offers an easy way to keep up to date with everything going on within MMA as well as a source of MMA-related entertainment. There are dozens of fighters, sports writers, commentators to follow, but here are a few twitters that are definitely worth following.

Whether you like it or not, Dana White is pretty much the big guy in MMA. You don't have to like him, but his tweeter feed is definitely worth following. He is often the first to break news about all sorts of MMA-related events and fighters. In addition, he will say just about anything and has no problem expressing himself, albeit the tweets are often heavily laced with profanity. Check out the results of a recent feud between Ken Shamrock and Dana White, which is nothing but fun.

There are many reasons to follow Joe Rogan on twitter. He likes to tweet about conspiracy theories, such as UFOs and phony moon landings. He likes to tweet about marijuana and LSD. Oh, and he's also an MMA expert and one of the sports best commentators and knows everything about MMA. He's also earned a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, both gi and no-gi.

Chael Sonnen is a dude without a verbal filter, and this is what makes following him on twitter such fun. He hates Anderson Silva and Wanderlei Silva, and he tweets about it a lot, including posting some pretty bad poetry about how much he hates them. At any rate, he and Wanderlei Silva were just chosen has the coaches for The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil, so that ought to be interesting.

Hundreds of MMA fighters have their own Twitter accounts, so there really is no shortage of good MMA quotes and information on Twitter. BJ Penn is always posting something interesting, and his website is like a little MMA world all on its own. Tito Ortiz includes tweets about everything from his take on MMA news, his training regime and quotes meant to inspire others. Ronda Rousey is another great person to follow and she definitely has no problem speaking her mind.

Virtually every MMA organization has a Twitter feed, and there are some excellent sports journalists with Twitter accounts that you might be interesting in viewing. Ariel Helwani is one great example, and he links to his interviews with fighters, as well as breaking news and other helpful MMA tidbits. Loretta Hunt is another great reporter that you should follow. She has been working in MMA since 2001 and there are few people more well-informed about mixed martial arts.
