Auto Emergency Kits Are Cost Effective And Help You Stay Safe

By Eric Holm

An auto emergency kit should be standard equipment in every vehicle on the road. People who do not drive long distances may feel there is no need for a vehicle emergency kit but this is not true. An emergency can happen anytime and anywhere, even on a short trip to the office or the corner grocery store. Someone could be stranded on the road and be in need of assistance. Preparing a kit ahead of time will save you from scrambling around for various items that could be stashed inside the trunk, back seat or glove compartment.

There are a few basic items that should be included in all auto emergency kits. A strong flashlight will come in handy if an emergency occurs after the sun goes down. If the car has a mechanical problem, you will need to have light to diagnose the problem. A good pair of leather gloves will be necessary if there is any work that needs to be done, like changing a tire. The gloves will keep your hands warm and also protect them from injury. A waterproof poncho is useful if it is raining or snowing. This will offer at least some protection from the elements if you have to spend time outside the car.

Always include drinking water and nonperishable snacks in the auto safety kit. Dehydration can be a problem if there is no access to water. Some trail mix or granola bars will be able to keep you going for awhile if you have to wait for help to arrive.

Depending on the weather conditions and location, it may take awhile for rescue services to reach you. If you are in a rural area far away from any city, it may take even longer. Having some food and water in your auto care kit can help you maintain your strength until help can get there.

When possible, always try to park the car in an area that has lights. This may not be an option if the car breaks down in the middle of nowhere. This is why it is crucial to include a light stick and flashlight in any vehicle survival kit. At least one extra set of batteries for the flashlight should be included in auto safety kits. The batteries could burn out if it takes a long time for help to arrive and the flashlight is turned on the entire time. No matter how far you are traveling, it is better to be safe than sorry when it comes to assembling emergency equipment to keep in the car.
