Hiking Vacations Are Fun

By Malcolm Andersen

If you want to have a vacation that is both memorable and thrilling, why not take a hiking vacation? You are sure to enjoy it whether you bring your family and friends with you or you go at it alone.

Hiking vacations offer a multitude of adventure that is always different for each hike. You get to enjoy the beautiful scenery and be one with Mother Nature.

Take Your Pick

When looking for the ideal hiking spot, you have an assortment of locations to choose from. You can decide to hike through a certain part of the woods or go on a hiking trail that has been hiked on by hiking enthusiasts. There are woods that have cleared trails which have been used as a walking trail.

You can also go and look for an uncleared trail in the woods for a more adventurous hike. However, if this is the route you want to take, be sure that you have informed a relative or a friend of your plans, such as location and time, in case you do get lost. You are sure to have a great experience whichever trail you do take in the end.

Pack Your Bags

Bring along things that are both necessary and very important for hiking. Do not overdo it though because you might not enjoy the hike if you are carrying a heavy load on your back. After all, the plan here is to enjoy your hike.

Dress depending on the weather. Wear light layered clothes if it is warm and thick layered clothes if it is cold. Bring along a light blanket for any emergency.

Don't forget the matches so that you can light up a fire. As a precaution, put the matches in a waterproof bag so they don't accidentally get wet. Pack a few light snacks since these can help you avoid hunger while hiking.

Bring lots of water. Dehydration can occur during hiking, and taking frequent stops to drink water keeps you hydrated. Plain old water is the best drink during hiking so keep those sodas and sweet drinks at home.

Take your camera with you. Wonderful scenery and wildlife abound especially in unmarked trails. You can take pictures or videos of these as you go along your path. Later, after you are well-rested and in the comfort of your own home, you can have the luxury of looking at the photos or videos you took to remind you of the fun you had.

Bring a smaller, lightweight quick drying towel to dry your hair, body, or camera and other gear when things get wet. Avoid a large cotton towel, as they tend to be bulky and very heavy when wet, and stay wet in your backpack for days.

Novice? Beginner? Greenhorn?

Whatever you wish to call yourself as a hiking beginner, it is best if you take things at a slow pace. Take someone hiking with you over the weekend so that you can get the feel of it. If possible choose someone that has had experience in hiking so that you can ask for a couple of tips including the best locations to go hike alone or with family and friends. Ask other hikers for their tips based on personal experiences.

After you get the hang of hiking, you will surely be hooked that you will always eagerly anticipate the next time that you can go hiking again.
