When Buying Motorhomes For Sale Ontario Customers Should Remember These Points

By April Briggs

A recreational vehicle or motorhome can be a great investment for those who enjoy camping or hitting the open road for an exciting adventure. However, since this is a rather "big-ticket" purchase, it's important to make sure that the vehicle one chooses is in reasonable shape and will last for several years without costing a fortune for repairs. When it comes to comparing and selecting prospective used motorhomes for sale Ontario buyers in the Hamilton area need to consider these guidelines.

A used camper should ideally be evaluated by a licensed mechanic before one decided to buy it or not. Certain items must be checked and noted such as the curb weight stated on the registration matching its weight when measured, ensuring that tanks do not leak by filling them with water, inspecting tires for evenly worn treads, an unusually hot engine, a rust-free chassis, and no sign of leaking in the engine or steering system.

Either a mechanic or the buyer himself can also check for these key issues on the vehicle's exterior. Scanning the plating for signs of previous repairs is critical to safety as this can weaken the integrity of the camper. The windows, doors, and any vents should open and close fully, there should be no rust, and the roof should be basically clean.

Inspecting the interior of the motorhome is also necessary. It should not smell stale inside, and there must be no mold growing on any surface, leakage from the walls, and all locks, doors, windows, hinges, cabinets, and such should be in good working order. The floors and walls should feel firm and dry to the touch.

Buyers should also know what to look for in specific rooms, namely the bathroom and kitchen. The bathroom should have sound joints around each fixture, and the shower must have intact caulking and no cracks of any sort. Swelling on the floor usually means there is a leak, which is of particular concern. All drains should clear fully, the toilet must flush completely, and pipes must not leak.

In the kitchen, one must make sure the fridge and stove are fully functional, that drains and taps work correctly, pipes show no signs of leaking, and that the floor is sound with no signs of swelling or buckling. It is a very costly and time-consuming repair to replace a motorhome floor, which should be avoided if possible.

There are also some other things one would be wise to check out when contemplating the purchase of an RV. Those who aren't familiar enough with vehicles to recognize a problem, should rely on the services of a mechanic for this purpose. It's advisable to inspect the boiler, water pump, electrical components, air conditioner, awnings, solar panels, generator, and wastewater disposal system.

A test drive is another step in the pre-purchasing process that should not be skipped. The most effective way to test out the camper is to fully load it and then take it out on the road for at least two hours. Any unusual sounds or movements during operation should be further investigated by a mechanic in order to identify potential problems.
