Is It Really Important To Learn Self Defence Technique?

By Mukhzani Mustaffa

Why bother wasting time learning self defence when you can just buy a pepper spray, stun gun or even a gun. I don't have time to learn any of these and having the right tools is enough to protect me and my loved ones. It's easy, simple and effective.

However, just imagine you are in the same situation. Let's say that the attacker tries to rob you and your pepper spray is all the way in your bag. By the time you try to look for it, he has already grabbed your bag and ran away with it. Or even worse, you manage to pull out your pepper spray and there's a struggle. Then, your attacker manages to overpower you. You will be in a more dangerous position because your attacker is now pissed because you fight back and he's now holding your pepper spray.

Then one might say if you are getting robbed, don't fight back, just give him whatever he wants. Well, it's totally true but there are some situations where you might need to respond. For example, you just took out your money to pay for your son's medical bill that has recently been diagnosed with leukemia. Do you just want to hand over your money to the robber?

What if you just finished your work and on the way back to your car. Someone grabs you from behind. Instead of just robbing you, the attacker wants to rape you too. What if you got bullied, instead of just slightly hitting your head, your bully got carried away and starts punching you in the face. You can't just let him punches you. Dodge it and push him away.

In situation like these, I think we can agree that knowing any sort of self defence technique is really important. If you are in these situations, you really need to know how to protect yourselves or your loved ones. But the goal is, to defend and get out of trouble in the shortest time possible. Do not prolong the fight, respond and run away.

But most of us never bother to learn self defence technique because we think it is too complicated and takes a lot of time. It's true but only if you want to some sort of muay thai (Thailand's martial art) champion or something. You do not need to spend a lot of time because your goal is not to get in a prolong fight.

It does not require a lot of time to build up your confidence and reflex. The truth is, you just need to spend 10-15 minutes two to three times per week to build up your confidence and reflex. If you like to hit the gym, you just need to swap one of your cardio exercises by doing self defence workout.

Finally the goal is to protect yourself and your loved ones. If you simply do not have the time or unwilling to spend time to learn self defence technique, just get yourself any self defence product. Just make a habit of placing it at any easily reachable place. But if you have the time, learn some self defence technique just in case.
