Some Publicly Traded Sports Teams Have Stock For Sale

By Cornelius Nunev

No one is able to be a sports team owner, usually, without being filthy, stinking rich. However, that isn't really always the case, as some groups really trade on stock markets and individuals can purchase shares. Some publicly-traded sports teams aren't exactly bad picks, either.

Most American not public

One of the lyrics in the song "Money" by Pink Floyd goes "I think I need a football team." Granted, they do not mean the NFL, since soccer is called football everywhere except Canada, Australia and the U.S. However, it would be neat to be the owner of sports team. The hitch is that most sports groups are privately owned. To purchase one or an ownership stake, one has to be rich.

You could always buy a share in a publicly-traded sports team though, and technically you own part of the team for a small amount of money. There are only a few numbers of sports teams publicly traded though, and most of them are not United States groups.

A very fast Initial Public Offering

Formula One is the world's premier racing series, and it prepared to do an IPO in Singapore earlier this year. Formula One is mostly owned by CVC Capital Partners though, according to Wall Street, and it stopped the OPO from occurring earlier. It will still be held later, in theory.

Instead of doing an Initial Public Offering in Singapore where the Manchester United was preparing on doing it originally, it is being done in the U.S., which is great news. The Wall Street Journal explained that the Glazer family owns much of the Manchester team, which is the New York Yankees of soccer, and they also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of Football. The Initial Public Offering is already scheduled, according to the Atlantic.

Do not purchase all

You could be certain you will make cash off of Manchester United after trading begins since it is the biggest sports franchise that exists. Another great option is Madison Square Garden's where the stock has traded above the industry average consistently, according to Daily Finance.

According to Daily Finance, it would not be good to publicly trade World Wrestling Entertainment since it has not been doing very well. BusinessWeek also points out that the American Basketball Association is trading for 5 cents per share, which is also bad.

Some other well-known soccer groups are publicly owned but according to the Atlantic, do not do as well as typical stocks, as their market performance is heavily tied to game performance, and losing streaks tend to tank share value.

Only one American sports team is publicly-traded, namely the Green Bay Packers. They are an oddity, as the NFL forbids more than 32 owners of any one team. However, the Packers joined the league before the rule was instated. It's a terrible investment, though. The stock can't be sold for profit and the team, a non-profit, pays no dividends.
