Going Key West Tarpon Fishing

By Rhea Solomon

The ways in which persons earn a living or indulge in a sporting activity, at times, can be many and varied. While some of the activities take place on land, others may be carried out in vast expanses of water, such as seas. These sea activities could surround sea life, such as Key West tarpon fishing, or they may not.

Tarpons are thought of as prehistoric fish, with brown or silver sides, according to their surroundings. The mouths as well as the scales of these tarpons are said to be large, and they have an upward-pointing, heavy bone structure. Since they possess lungs, tarpons are able to live in shallow water, coming up to the surface from time to time, to breathe in oxygen.

It appears that the fish and the location are suitably paired with each other for this sporting activity. They are thought to give fisher folk a thrill, as tarpons fight back, producing acrobatics and runs that cause the heart to pound, and the gut to wrench. This is perhaps a spectacle to behold, especially in the warm, shallow water in which this fish enjoys living and spawning.

Various means may be employed, as attempts are made at catching these fish during the sport event. For instance, a live crab on a rod is the feature of light tackling. In that activity, a living crab is placed on a rod as it spins, and then thrown to a gathering of tarpons which tackle it without mercy, thereby causing an exhilarating show.

Fly fishing can also be thrilling, particularly for fishermen who are good at angling, and are willing to start early. The general feeling is that the intensity of the fish is able to test the character of the angler, along with his gear. Anglers with experience feel that the way the sporting boat is positioned makes a difference in how the fly is offered to the fish, because the fisher needs to go inside the fish mind and think like a fish.

Even the equipment used needs to be of a special kind to go anywhere near this peculiar fish. For example, the rod should be within a particular weight range to be of any value, and its required matching reel should be well backed. Of significance, too, are the floating weight, the shock tippet, and leader system made from fluorocarbons, which are all employed in the double haul technique used for casting.

Certified captains in the persons of experienced anglers are willing to play the guide role within the area. Their enthusiasm is such that even novices in the sport are accommodated and gladly given lessons on how to catch the tarpons. The experts go the extra mile of providing the high quality fly rods and spinning tackles that are required.

It appears that the sport of Key West tarpon fishing is a well established, enjoyable, and interesting one. This sporting activity seems to provide expert anglers with the most thrilling experience. Novices in the sport, however, should not be overlooked, as they can learn a lot from their enthusiastic guides.
