By George Dodson

A hunting knife is probably the most important thing that you will need in a hunt. You should take time in choosing such tool. Many aspects have to be taken in consideration in finding the "perfect knife". Will it be used for something specific or does it need to serve a multiple task? In the end, you will need to make up your mind in just one specific type of hunting knife.

Kind of Knife

There exist two kinds of knives you can decide on. One has a fixed blade and the other fold or lock back. Both of which will provide you with great benefits. Most important is to find the one that fits your hunting style the best. A few more deciding factors will be how you will carry the knife and how you can store it.

Lock back or folding blade knives have a special feature with an indentation on the blade where the thumb nail helps to open the blade. It is actually a great knife as it secures safety for the user. To sheath or hide the blade of the closing knife, you can simply press the on or off button. The lock blade knife or the folding knife is best for you if you are used to carrying your knife around your waist or belt during hunting.Another benefit of these knives is that they are smaller than fixed blades when they are folded in.These knives are practically useful for everyday purposes however may not be ideal for hunting big games.

Fixed blades are considered to be stronger than lock blades because it doesn't have a hinge. You can simply use this knife in any tasks that require a knife. It is designed with a handle grip and a solid metal blade.Since the knife doesn't have hinges, the blade is always exposed. The best quality knife is where a blade has a full tang, meaning that from top to end, the blade is solid. A handle get fixed to both sides of the blade and gets riveted to the projection.Usually seen on television, these knives are carried around the waist, strapped around the boot or leg and others. Likewise, you will also need to make a choice of your knives' sheath. Fixed blades are best used in hunting big game and camping in thick woods.

Kind of Blade

There are many blades to be found. To name a few: clip points, drop points and skinning blades are the most sought after by the hunter. A clip point is more traditional and the tip of the knife is curved. This is used mainly for the stressful tasks of cutting. You can easily cut and get into smaller areas through the curve tip of this knife. However, you can't always use this knife to handle large animals. The drop point blade on the other hand is best to handle large animals. This knife has a longer sweeping curve starting at the top and the drop starts at the center of the blade. Its main purpose is to prevent the hide to be damaged and is a very useful item when out hunting.

Last but not the least is the skinning blade. The blade has a very unique design where the edge has sweeping upward carvings that ends in a specific point. The top edge of this blade has an upward sweeping design. Although named skinning, it is not only used to skin or to remove the hide of your trophy but it can also be used to cap out your trophys' head.

Then there is the gut hook. The main purpose of this knife is opening the belly. It allows you to cut into the internals without having to perish the meat.
