Choose Suitable First Aid Supplies For An Emergency Kit

By Eric Holm

Many people make the mistake of failing to prepare for an emergency situation. Assembling the proper first aid supplies well in advance of a disaster can make all the difference between life and death. Accidents can happen anywhere and at any time of the day or night. Everyone should invest the time and effort into assembling some basic items and storing them in a central location.

Acquiring a first aid kit with a few extra supplies does not cost a fortune. You can easily spend a minimal amount of money in buying something which is highly necessary to evade any minor or major casualty in your life. Although no first aid kit can have supplies to handle all major medical troubles that occurs suddenly; a properly accumulated first aid kit can handle all emergency situations, or enable the victim to survive till expert medicare arrives.

Before shopping for supplies, prepare a first aid check list. Some injuries will require specific items for treatment. A kit prepared for a motor vehicle may contain certain items that are not needed for a kit stored at home. Each kit should be filled with a variety of items that will be useful regardless of the specific nature of the emergency. Consumers may choose to assemble kits from scratch or buy a prepackaged kit that contains everything on their list.

Sterile pads, assorted bandages, tweezers, surgical tape and sharp scissors are items in a first aid kit that come in handy for every emergency, small and large. Small packages of insect repellent and SPF 30 or higher sunscreen will offer protection against bug bites and sunburn if you become stranded outside for an extended period of time. Include aspirin or some other pain reliever but remember to check the expiration date periodically and replace them when necessary. Rubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer and hydrogen peroxide are additional items that will come in handy to clean out a wound and reduce the risk of infection. Some kits will even include a basic suture kit and a mouth guard for use while administering CPR to a victim. This first aid list includes everything needed to treat a wide range of injuries. Scrapes and small cuts can be easily treated with little more than some antibiotic cream and a clean bandage. More sophisticated kits will have other types of equipment needed for a more severe trauma. Someone having a heart attack may be treated with a defibrillator machine. This device can save a life, especially if an accident occurs in a location that is far removed from any emergency services. Someone who has passed out may be revived by waving smelling salts underneath the nose. Additional items like burn ointment, a thermometer, eyewash solution and cold packs can be added to any disaster kit.

Although it is difficult to cover up the damage that comes after a disaster a well stocked medical kit with good emergency supplies can successfully prevent a situation becoming worse. So take some time from your busy schedule and assemble your first aid kit and first aid supplies as nothing costs more than the loss of life.
