Visit The Wind River WY

Anyone looking for a really special vacation should check out the state of Wyoming. There is so much to do and see, from spectacular scenery to fishing and outdoor sports. The mountains are a true wilderness paradise. Many people have no idea that such fantastic Alpine landscapes even exist within the United States.

The area has been home to the Arapaho Indians for many centuries. They cherished the land as provider of their food and shelter. In fact native American culture was totally in tune with the environment and took every step to protect it. The Wind River WY area is part of the bigger Bridger Wilderness area, which was established fifty years ago. This was in recognition of the explorer and mountain man Jim Bridger who was one of the first Europeans to see this special land around three hundred years ago.

The entire area is an outdoor enthusiasts paradise. There are miles of back country trails that are perfect for hiking. Those who like to really get off the beaten path will be in their element. However, there are some safety factors to keep in mind. Some of the trails are many miles from the nearest town and cell phone reception can be sketchy at best. Only those who really know what they are doing and have all the right equipment should venture out on these trails.

Serious hikers will need to have up to date maps and know how to use a compass. They should also carry plenty of warm clothing as there can be sub zero temperatures even in the summer. Sudden thunder storms are common in July and August, there may even be snow squalls at the higher elevations.

Today, those who consider themselves serious hikers often make their way to the Wind River area to enjoy some real back country trails. Many are an hour or mores drive from the nearest town. Due to their remote locations these trails are certainly not for beginners. Hikers must be sure to carry all the right gear to protect them from the changeable weather. Even in the height of summer snow showers and thunderstorms are common.

Fishing vacations are very popular for people of all ages. Even a total beginner can learn the tips and techniques for landing that big fish. Families can also spend time together relaxing and having fun.

There is a wonderful range of wildlife which provides a big attraction for tourists. This is one of the few places where elk, moose, bear, wolves and mountain lions can all be found. Wildlife photographers love the chance to snap some shots of these majestic animals in their natural habitat.

Most visitors head to the area in mid summer. The higher altitudes can be cold and snow squalls are not uncommon even in the summer months. During the winter many of the mountain areas are totally inaccessible and the winter sports enthusiasts must stay on the marked trails.
