By Beryl Dalton

Blackjack, commonly referred to as twenty-one, is the name of a card game played around the globe. It is one of the most popular banking games seen at casinos. The game is played in competition against the dealer. There is a lot to know regarding how to win blackjack.

The game uses one or more standard decks featuring 52 cards. Players strive to beat the dealer, which can be done in a few different ways. Players win if they get 21 points on their initial hand of two cards, this is called blackjack. Another way to win is by reaching a final score higher than the dealer but less than 21. The player can also beat a dealer by allowing him or her to draw additional cards until the hand goes over 21.

In this game, the player is given two cards to start off with. This is considered the first hand and the value of the cards are to be added. Face cards, which includes jacks, kings and queens, are worth 10 points. The dealer and player may count an ace card as 1 or 11 points. Every other card is counted by its numerical value. At any point in the round, a dealer or player can win by scoring 21 points on their cards or having the highest number that does not exceed 21. People who go over 21 automatically lose.

There are different rule variations in this game. Since the 1960s, this has been a target for advantage players. More specifically, card counters who track the cards that have been dealt and strategize accordingly. This activity is banned and reprimanded in many casinos because it is considered a form of cheating. Nonetheless, there are plenty of people who still do it and get away with it.

Winning is often based on chance. Still, each player tends to employ some degree of strategy to increase their changes for winning. Many study these strategies and apply them to improve their game play and win more often. Different factors may determine how a game is played and whether or not the strategies are successful.

People who have the most success in the game make good decisions. After receiving the initial two cards, players have the options to: split, hit, double down or stand. Hitting refers to taking extra cards. This can change the total count for the round. Those who decide to stand choose not to accept any other cards and are confident in what they have.

Those who choose to double down are able to increase their initial bet by 100 percent, usually. This is done by those willing to commit to stand after receiving a single card. The additional bet is placed in the betting box along with the original bet.

Then there is the split decision, in which a player can choose to split two cards in their hand of the same value. This means moving a second bet that is equal to the first in an area outside the betting box. Generally, these are treated as independent hands that the player can win or lose on separately. Some games offer the option to surrender, terminating their hand and getting half the bet back.
