If you want to experience sailing your own boat then you must be eager to know all about the various yacht parts. A sailor needs to know his or her vessel inside out. Knowing how to sail is not all there is to sailing. Even if you opt to learn sailing you are sure to be taught all about the parts of the vessel before you are taught to sail. This is so, since knowing the parts can allow you to understand the functions of the parts of the boat. You can sail by applying the knowledge. This can be helpful in times of emergencies, even if you do not want to sail. Here are a few of the most important boat parts that everyone should know.

One of the most important parts of the yacht is the Mast. This long pole, usually made of wood, is a major part of the boats frame. The Mast holds together the sails that allow the boat to move. Without the Mast there would be no frame to hold the sails in place.

Fixed to the centered Mast are two main sails that make the vessel mobile even without any motors. Towards the front of the boat is the Fore sail or Head sail. On the opposite side of the Mast is the Main Sail. The Main is largest sail and it needs the additional framework of the Boom to hold it in place.

The Mast needs to be attached to a sturdy part of the boat, and this part of the boat is the Deck. The flat floor of the vessel, where almost all the visible parts of the vessel is located, is the Deck of the yacht. The space between the deck and the yachts framework offers storage space.

Control of the vessel is centered at the Cockpit. All the communication gadgets as well as vessel controls are located at the Cockpit. The location of the Cockpit is usually towards the stern of the ship from where the Captain gets a good view of the entire vessel. Since yachts are luxury vessels there needs to be an area for the passengers to relax and enjoy. This area is the Cabin Trunk. The Cabin Trunks location is right in front of the Cockpit. The way to the Cabin Trunk from the Cockpit is known as the Companion Way.

The different sides of the vessel have different names. The left side of the yacht is the Port side. The right is the Starboard side. The front of the vessel is the Bow. The rear of the boat is the Stern of the boat, here there generally is a motor that is functional when the yacht is not sailing.

On the underside of the vessel are two parts that helps in controlling the steering of the vessel. The Rudder is located Stern side while the Keel is just under the middle of the boat. Both help by allowing the yacht to move in a straight direction instead of sideways.

The safety of passengers is an important issue. Hence there are yacht parts that helps keep passengers safe. The Lifelines offers railings to prevent passengers from falling over board. The Pulpit, at the Bow, also serves a similar protective purpose.
