By Marsha Klein

There are a great many hobbies out there that people get involved in. Sometimes people start with a hobby because of a family connection and sometimes they are just looking for something that appeals to them. The reasons people do these things are as varied as the people doing it. Collectible fishing lures is much the same way.

There is a rich and storied history behind the sport. People have been fishing in various ways for a great many years. It goes back through the generations. Live bait was also not the only way that people caught fish either. It was not a stretch to figure out that you could catch fish with artificial lures.

Once people figured out how to make such things the craft took off. More and more people wanted the baits because it meant that they would not have to go out searching for and catching live bait before every fishing trip. When you are fishing with tackle, or with a rod and reel it is mostly for sport. Sure you can do it this way for food as well.

Many of the companies that exist today were around back then making baits for maybe ten people. Some of them started out as just a back yard hobby. Simply because one fisherman wanted a bait that looked and worked like he alone wanted. Once he started to have success with his creation other people wanted to know what he was using.

No matter the reasons why there are a great number of people who collect artificial baits that date back to sometimes the 1900's or beyond. They do it because they love it and because it brings them joy. For many of them the hunt to locate a special, hard to find lure can be a thrill. Especially once the finally locate the one they have been searching for.

Considering the beating that some of these took it does surprise people to see that so many have made it so far and in such good condition. On the other hand it is just as surprising to see how many of the real old lures look just like the ones from today. They might have been made from very different materials but they they could look very similar.

These baits were made in the past from wood and various other materials. One of the most surprising factors about the older ones is the amount of hooks that were put on each one. Sometimes as many as 7 to 10 hooks were used on some of the larger ones. Today a bait of the same type would only have three hooks. That is a huge difference.

Collectible fishing lures have been around for a very long time and they will continue to be around for a very long time. The numbers of people who are fishing today has remained fairly steady for many years. The sport has survived the great depression and many other disasters and will continue to do so. Fishing will remain a popular sport for young and old alike.
