Don't Let Moving Stress You Out

By Pammy McGrath

When you are buying a home, you are inundated with a huge list of tasks such as home inspections, securing a bank loan and much more. Packing and getting ready for a move to your new piece of Fredericksburg real estate or Hill Country real estate includes another set of chores that can seem pretty stressful to tackle. The following suggestions can help you streamline the moving process.

When it comes to moving, you have two basic choices. You can hire a moving company or rent a truck and complete the move on your own. Either way, you need to plan for this service immediately. Start calling movers and getting quotes right away, or reserve your truck as soon as you are sure of the closing date of escrow. A representative of the moving company should actually come to your home and take a good look at everything that needs to be moved as well as the overall logistics. Don't just ask for a quote over the phone.

One chore that we all dread but must complete is packing, and the sooner you begin tackling this task, the better. You can simply begin by packing items you don't use every day. This might include decorative items, holiday decorations, books, out-of-season clothes and non-essential kitchen gear.

As you pack, it is best that you stay as organized as possible. Don't mix items when packing, each box should be similar in contents or go to the same room in the new home. This makes unpacking much easier. You can label each box with a marker and select a different color marker for each room. For example, all the boxes that will go into the new kitchen might feature green lettering, while all the master bedroom boxes are written with a blue marker. Give a quick description of what is inside the box so you know which boxes probably should be opened first and which ones can wait a day or two.

It really helps to have a master list created that includes all of the many tasks that need to be completed by your moving date. There are so many things to do that it's hard to store them all in your brain, so make a list and you will be less likely to forget important tasks. Organize the list by category or perhaps by the date when items need to be accomplished.

Your list should include escrow tasks, packing tasks and other important jobs. For instance, you need to deal with turning utilities off at the old house and on at the new house. If you are moving out of the area, you might need to acquire school records, medical records and transfer prescriptions. You also need to put in a change of address order with the post office and begin permanently changing the address for anyone who sends you a bill. This includes magazine subscriptions, credit card companies, health insurance paperwork and anything else you can remember. The forwarding order from the post office will only last a few months, so call or go online to update your addresses.
