Workouts To Build Ball Handling Skills

By Saad Mirza

Warming up to play basketball is one of the most important parts of the game. The warmup can determine your play ability as well as prevent injuries. Of the warmup one of the most important components is the stretching session.

When you stretch go slow and easy. There is time to hustle once the game has begun. Use the time that you are stretching to test your body and ensure that everything feels right. Using your stretches to promote bodily awareness will tell you how hard you can push yourself in the game. Remember what you learned in gym class. These are usually the best exercises for you to do. These include basic squats, arm reaches over the head, and those stretches where you turn side to side.

Graduating from the simple dribble you can begin to zig-zag across the court or dribble through cones. This also works on your control of the ball and teaches you to switch off your footwork making it harder for an opponent to steal the ball from you. These can be done very fast and look pretty impressive to people who are new players. Feinting is a huge basketball skill and one you should utilize when you can. Not only is it helpful, but it's easy to practice.

These are some of the simplest drills you can do to improve your quality of ball handling on the court. Sadly, many people overlook their ball dribbling when it comes to practicing their game. Someone who is good at handling the ball is someone who decreases the amount of turnovers in a single game.

Some of the best stretches for basketball are the basic ones you learned in gym class. Toe touches, squats while holding the ball, over head arm reaches, and stretches that have you turning side to side are great ways to ready your body for play. Stretches that focus on your back and core are much less effective for warming up your body.

Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned player dribbling is the fundamental that can have the most variation. Making sure you are comfortable with the ball and know how to apply your moves in a real game can set you apart from many other players. Practice these moves and see them translate into on-court confidence.
