The Importance Of Towboat Pilots Guide

By Kathryn Neal

Towboat pilots guide is a necessity for anyone seeking to find a great opportunity to work on the water. These jobs are not restricted to the west and east coasts alone, but they are also available to the large waterways. This encompasses Chattahoochee Rivers, Tennessee, Mississippi, and the Great lakes among others. In Europe, they are commonly known as pushers. Some are so powerful that they can tow a whole fleet of others, while some are restricted to tow fifteen vessels.

These barges originated at the time of steamboats. They gained popularity and were used to pull wooden pushers when steam powered ships were on the downward trend. They were used to keep the income quite steady following the decline of steamboats. The increase in steam powered locomotives spearheaded the decline of steamboats and consequently led to the rise of tugboats.

Since the cargo vessels are not able to tug their loads to the harbors due to the shallow water depths, the pushers are popular in coastal canals. They are therefore used to tug the pushers to the docks. A pusher with enormous horsepower is required to pull massive cargo-filled pushers.

These water vessels are designed to travel on the waters in the deep ends. They are therefore furnished with sleeping quarters and dining halls. They are also commonly used during sea searches and rescue missions. Ship wrecks which happen to occur in the deep sea are towed to the docks. The active captains are usually instrumental in curbing drug trafficking security issues.

Many of the coastal towns are famous for spectacular scenes as well as their rich history. It makes it very interesting to have an opportunity to work as a captain for the tugboats. Savannah and Charleston are just but a few examples to mention, which have an ideal environment to raise a family and to live in.

Getting to work in such a field, one has to through relevant authorizing bodies which are responsible in providing license. The available licenses are for Mates, Masters and Apprentice Mate for hauling vessels. With any of the above licenses, one is able to pilot vessel of 26 feet long or even more. Vast experience is, however, acquired from apprenticeship.

The new tugboat pilots are required to first work as interns. During this period, they work under the supervision of proficient pilots. They learn how to fix boats from the captain. As a beginner, one is supposed to know all the parts of the boat. He is also supposed to know how to repair those parts that become faulty. This equips them with the fundamental skills which may come in handy when the ship is in the sea.

Reading through the towboat pilots guide and acquiring a valid license gives an individual the go ahead of operating barges. The qualifications permit one to control the pusher anywhere without inspection. A good reputation is earned by the captain if he is able to safely sail without crushing. A safe sailor with good reputation is sought and he is able to earn a better living without straining.
