Where To Buy A Dutch Bike In Calgary

By Max Foster

I want to buy a Dutch bike and live in Calgary, I had a hard time finding a bike shop that specializes in anything but road and mountain bikes. With Dutch bikes gaining in popularity this was a little surprising but the shops in the city seem more centered in moving tonnes of product as opposed to serving niche market stuff. I turned to the internet and Google to start my search instead.

My reason for buying a Dutch bike would be to simply have a decent bike to ride around town. Which is the real value with the Dutch bike from my perspective. The upright riding position, comfortable saddle and just relaxed style generally seems right for cruising over to the coffee shop.

The first bike that really caught interest is a Brooklyn Cruiser single speed called the Bedford. Contemplating the way I am going utilize the Dutch bike along with the sort of riding that I need to be ready to do using it, I am thinking the single speed Dutchie would be all that I need.

The Brooklyn Cruiser website describes it like this: "Are you a stylish Amsterdam native pedaling down the network of bicycle paths in a suit, on your way to the office? A French porteur from the 1940s, delivering newspapers to waiting customers? Or a practitioner of two-wheeled meditation, free from the confines of an office and a schedule, enjoying a brief respite on a sunny Sunday morning? The Bedford embodies all of these. The sprung saddle, cushy tires, and upright riding position provide comfort that's lacking in bikes designed for the Lycra-clad weekend warrior set." Part of that applies to me, so this could be the right bike for me.

That really is all that I am looking for, the appeal of big curved handle bars and tires that don't pick up every crack in the road. I have a few bikes but none of them could be described that way.

The clean lines of the Roadster Classic from Linus is another Dutch bike that I would consider. It also meets all of my requirements. Single speed and a lot sportier looking than most of the other bikes in this category. The text on the Linus website gets me excited to, they make it sound like the bike to have if you were going to peddle around the Alps in 50's. I think this bike would appeal to any cycling purist.

I don't think I would ever buy a bike without first riding it and I was stoked to come across the place to shop in Calgary for urban cycling gear while I was doing my research. While online research is great, nothing takes the place of a spin and the ability to touch and feel when it comes to a purchase like a bike. BikeBike in Calgary is a newer shop in the city and I couldn't believe their entire business was built around the commuter, Dutch bike lifestyle.

BikeBike is the place to go in Calgary for Dutch Bikes, Cargo bikes and, like I said, anything that you might need for commuting or recreational urban cycling. I recommend you check them out.
