Safety Checks To Carry Out On Power Yacht Charters

By Alison Wilcox

Sailing an power yacht charters are becoming a popular activity with individuals and groups booking events. The internet is an easy way to check up on what many of the events companies have to offer. Events can be booked for individuals, private parties or couples and for group activities. Events can be anything you like, but managed events are generally leisure activities such as visits to theaters and shows, concerts and popular sporting events.

Anyone with sailing experience can choose to skipper the boat, but they will have to go through the mandatory safety training before they can sail away. However, you can select to have a member of the charter company sail the yacht, leaving you to mingle with your guests. Boats, yachts and crew can be chartered by the hour, the day or for a longer period.

Always ask for a copy of the charter company insurance policy. Read it carefully, especially the small print and liability clauses. You need to know where you stand in case of accident or injury to anyone on board. A portion of the hire fee you pay should be to cover the cost of insurance for your event.

Whenever possible, take a tour of a vessel before signing up to an events and hire agreement. Things to look out for and to ask about are related to safety, and are especially important if you intend sailing the yacht yourself. Check that there are working fire extinguishers on board and where they can be found.

Safety items such as flares need to be handy, but safely stored, with clear instruction on their use. The charter company will specify maximum numbers depending on the size of the boat. You need to make sure that there are sufficient life-vests for all the passengers and how to access them when required. Many charter companies make the wearing of a life-vest compulsory at all times when sailing. Young children are particularly vulnerable and should always wear their life-jacket.

Whether your trip will last for an hour or a day, you should always ensure you have enough supplies of fresh water and food on board for the duration. Know where to find the first aid kit and make sure it is well stocked. Take time for instructions on how to operate the radio and check it works.

You and your guests will enjoy the trip, when you can relax in the knowledge that all the safety equipment is in place and you can cope if an emergency does arise. If you are responsible for booking a charter, then you need to check all the safety equipment is in place and in proper working order. It would be foolish ignore your responsibilities and to rely on the charter company to check everything.

Power yacht charters can be expensive and prices can vary for several reasons. The larger the boat and the more powerful, the larger the cost. The number of passengers, the catering requirements and any entertainment provided will all add to the basic costs. If you choose to hire crew members rather than sail the boat yourself, it will affect the price.
