Basic Guidelines For Learning To Speak English

By Debra Cooley

English is one of the world's most commonly spoken languages and it is essential to know for those who wish to work or learn in such an environment. It is possible for anyone to speak, read, and write it fluently with some proper instructions and plenty of practice. This guide to learning to speak English provides a general idea as to how to go about this process.

Starting out by grasping the most fundamental elements of the language is the best place to begin. The phonetic alphabet and pronunciation of each letter should be learned first, then the student can move on to the basic verbs including do, get, make, have, take, say, go and be. Nouns, pronouns, and adverbs can then be introduced, and the learner can start to build sentences.

Once the student is able to speak a few simple sentences, he or she can begin to carry out conversations in which questions are asked using who, where, what, why, and how, and then answered. Working with another person who is a native English speaker can be very helpful when practicing dialogue as this person will be able to point out any mistakes which are made.

Concentrating on learning present tenses is recommended first. The student can then move on to understanding the purpose of adjectives, used to describe nouns, and practice the proper use and placement of them, being mindful to always insert them before, not after the nouns.

Attaching labels bearing the English names for various objects in the home is a great way to help students learn the names of these items. Being able to see the names regularly will help one memorize them. When learning words, the student must also ensure that he or she is pronouncing them correctly. Most nouns stress the first syllable, and verbs stress the second one.

Purchasing two dictionaries is advisable, one should be English only and the other should translate from the native language to English. They are invaluable reference resources. Being exposed to the language in as many ways as possible is the best way to take it in, listening to songs, and viewing children's shows can be a good introductory way to learn because they are slower paced and use simpler words.

Working with a private tutor is useful for many students. Regularly conversing with native speakers of the language is the ideal way to practice one's newly acquired speaking skills. Answering questions in more words rather than less is recommended to help the learner put his or her new vocabulary into use.

Another helpful resource for people learning to speak English are the various internet chat rooms and groups, where students can converge to talk about their concerns and ask any questions they may have about word use, grammar and such. Some pupils will prefer to attend classes at an ESL school. Whichever approach is taken, with some diligence, patience, and practice, the ability to speak the language in a fluent manner can be acquired.
